SUMMARY
The Pioneer VSX-1123 receiver has, just like its bigger brothers, a clear and distinct sound, but lower resolution and some noise in the signal processing.
Distinctive sound.
AirPlay.
User friendly.
Sounds a bit sterile.

It includes a CD with the program AVNavigator that makes it incredibly easy to set up the VSX- 1123. You just follow the program step by step and the unit is automatically set.
Automatic calibration of the speakers include correction of phase and standing waves. It is a process that takes a while and requires a little patience, so grab a cup of coffee in the meantime.
Sound Quality
Just like its bigger brothers the VSX-1123 paints a large soundstage with great cohesion. Clear, distinct dialogue has become a hallmark of Pioneer and this unit is no exception. But the VSX-1123 is not as resolved as we had hoped. The soundstage is a little sterile and the upper register is a bit rough. The dialogue can get over-emphasized sibilants, like sharp ‘s’ and ‘sch’ sounds.
You will hear some noise and whizzing from the signal processing easily through the speakers when you turn up the volume. It is variable and not constant, which indicates that it comes from the digital domain and not analog. This is heard only when there is loud noise from the signal source, but is quite noticeable when watching movies.
It is only natural that a receiver in this price range does not have as much power as more expensive models, so it comes as no surprise that the VSX-1123 is less powerful than its big brother. Still, it plays loud enough for most home theaters. But be sure to get help from a subwoofer in the bass register.
Even when playing music, the pure and open voice reproduction is evident, and a grand piano is reproduced with good dynamics. Again, it may be a bit thin, with the crisp highs. In stereo, we recommend a pair of floorstanding speakers, so that you can play in the Pure Direct mode without losing the bass. This would avoid unnecessary processing, with better sounding results.
