Vivitek H1180HD Review

A Pale Story

Vivitek H1180HD review

When it comes to ease of use, there is not much to say about the Vivitek H1180HD. The remote control is nifty with backlit clearly laid out buttons for home theater darkness, and an option to set the contrast and brightness directly. These are the two most important settings. In addition, each primary and secondary color (RGBCMY) is adjusted in both hue, saturation and brightness.

SUMMARY

Despite plenty of adjustable settings, the Vivitek H1180HD never quite make it in terms of picture quality.

PLUS
The black level is dark and the brightness good, giving a good contrast in the image. Moreover, there is only a little noise and no annoying distractions. Bonus points for good setting options.
MINUS
Unfortunately the color saturation fail. The colors are dull and faces look almost sickly pale.

The menu system is clean and easy to navigate.

Image Quality

The color mode "Movie" works best for movies (obviously), and has the most neutral colors. As for noise, the projector is good and short on artifacts. Shades are smooth in a blue sky and the picture is sharp. Vivitek has a good perceived contrast, and good dark blacks combined with plenty of light.

The problem is that the colors are not saturated enough. The projector is bright enough, but I suspect that the white segment of the color wheel is a tad too big to enable a higher brightness. This means less light for each color, which provides a washed out color reproduction. The blue sky is quite gray and faces look almost sickly lifeless.

H1180HD is equipped with BrilliantColor to provide more saturated colors. But in Viviteks case, this seem to affect the overall brightness more than color saturation. It pulls slightly towards green when it goes full blast, and with the function turned off, the colors are more reddish. The picture looks best with BrilliantColor in the middle position, level 5 out of 10.

You can saturate the colors by going through each color, though you still need calibration equipment to avoid going overboard.
