BoomBox Group Test: Harman Kardon Go+Play Wireless Review

Balanced Tones

Harman Kardon Go+Play review

If you do not fancy all the flashing disco lights usually found on some traditional boom boxes, and don´t need an iPod dock, guitar jack or CD player, then Go+Play Wireless might be right on target.

SUMMARY

The Bluetooth version of the Harman Kardon Go+Play is minimalistic in terms of both looks and features. But it sounds fabulous.

PLUS Balanced and rhythmic sound. Rich bass. Plays loud.
MINUS Few functions. Not among the most powerful.

The unit is softly curved and shaped as a semicircle, where the handle is an integral part.

The functions are simple and good: wireless transfer via bluetooth or connection of any type of music player via minijack cable.

If you want to run the H/K system on battery, load it with eight D batteries.

The Sound

Harman Kardon Go + Play top view

H/K Go+Play Wireless easily connects with your mobile phone via bluetooth. Just as easy as to plug it in using a mini jack cable.

The sound is best with cable. Harman Kardon Go+Play delivers a rhythmic and rich bass. The soundstage is big and lush, without sounding pushy or hard. Vocals are well defined and although the midrange never stand out, it feels right in place. Especially female voices shines nicely, and so does male voices.

The midrange is however a tad thin lower down, so loud male voices do not really get the fullness they deserve. But otherwise there is nothing negative to say. There are plenty of overtones that extracts the air in the mix.

This is the most complete test subject, which is also the easiest to hang on the handlebars of a bike when you have to travel somewhere. This also means that the Go+Play isn´t the most powerful contender in this group test, even if it is not at all far behind. Harman Kardon preserves the dynamics and control surprisingly well unless you push it far too hard.

Music via Bluetooth sounds flatter and more lifeless than with cable, especially in the midrange, but at the beach I choose bluetooth over cable anytime.

This is a unit I definitely recommend for outdoors this summer!
